The most revolutionary date of the year has arrived, and we are already preparing to raise our voices. A journey through the history of Barcelona.
If you want to know what role women played in the history of Barcelona, don’t miss the route we have prepared for you on 7 March. This unique experience will take you through different historical points of the city, where you can learn first-hand about the struggles, conquests and challenges that have marked the path of women’s rights over the years.
A historical tour with a gender perspective
The itinerary will take us to key moments in the history of revolts, revolutions and social movements in Barcelona, focusing on the fundamental role played by women. We will learn about episodes such as the Setmana Tràgica (Tragic Week) of 1909, when women led the insurrection against the colonial war in Morocco. We will discover how they organised themselves in the face of famine and how they played a leading role in the women’s wandering of 1918.
Likewise, we will also go back to the approval of women’s suffrage and other political and social rights achieved during the Second Republic. Furthermore, we will not forget the role of women during the Civil War, both at the front and in the rearguard, nor the repression and exploitation they suffered during Franco’s regime. Not only that, but we will also remember the protagonists of the struggles against the dictatorship, the neighbourhood movement, the feminist and LGTBI movements, as well as the protests that took place during the Transition.
Emblematic points of the route
During this day we will visit such symbolic places as the Columbus Monument, Las Ramblas, plaça Reial, plaça Sant Jaume, plaça de Sant Josep Oriol, plaça Catalunya and plaça Universitat. At each stop, we will review how the rights we enjoy today have been won, and in some cases lost.
