November 13th is World Mediterranean Diet Day, which is one of the healthiest and most sustainable diets in the world. How lucky are we to be able to say that this is the diet we follow?
What does the Mediterranean diet consist of? It is a balanced and varied diet, full of nutrients, very healthy and tasty, with a predominance of plant-based foods, spices and herbs, proteins, carbohydrates, etc.
The typical food pyramid we have all heard about is a clear example of what we should all implement in our diet.
What are the benefits of following this type of diet? It can help reduce the risk of certain diseases and can improve both mood and energy levels. As well as keeping the heart and brain healthy.
What changes can we gradually make to build a Mediterranean diet?
- Introduce a variety of fruits and vegetables into our diet.
- Introducing whole grain items such as brown rice or wholemeal bread
- Choosing healthy, unsaturated fats, such as olive oil
- Limit the amount of red meat intake
- Limit sweets and desserts
- Moderate the amount of dairy products and eggs we eat
Finally, the Mediterranean diet helps us to lead a healthy lifestyle as well as regular exercise.
To start changing your habits to healthier ones, introduce changes little by little, and you will see how you will feel better in general. Our first suggestion: Start by eating two pieces of fruit per day and take the stairs instead of the lift.
